Urban legend has it that 7-20-4 cigars were so-named, because R.G. Sullivan, who founded the brand in 1874, got his start in business with the winnings from a lottery ticket with the numbers 7, 20, and 4. However, writer George Franklyn Willey, offered a more plausible explanation in his book, Willey's semi-centennial book of Manchester, 1846-1896, that Sullivan changed the brand's original name, "New Gold Dust Cigars" to "7-20-4," the address of his Manchester, NH cigar factory at 724 Elm Street. The cigars, which sold for 10¢, were hand-made with Cuban tobacco fillers and Sumatra wrappers. The brand was so successful that Sullivan's factory became one of the world's largest manufacturers of handmade cigars. Today, Kurt A. Kendall, an entrepreneur and owner of two New Hampshire cigar stores, always had a fascination for vintage cigar memorabilia. Over the years he built-up an extensive collection of artifacts, and one of his passions was to revive the 7-20-4 cigars brand. So, Kendall acquired the then-defunct trademark, and began reproducing the historic cigars that now rank as one of the best boutique cigars on the market.
Urban legend has it that 7-20-4 cigars got their name from the
numbers on a lottery ticket won by R.G. Sullivan, who established
the brand in 1874. This theory, however, was challenged by George
Franklyn Willey in his book, Willey's semi-centennial book of
Manchester, 1846-1896. He proposed that Sullivan chose "7-20-4"
after the address of his cigar factory at 724 Elm Street in
Manchester, NH - which would explain why he changed the original
name "New Gold Dust Cigars" to "7-20-4". Each cigar was handmade
and sold for 10¢ apiece - unfortunately they cannot be shipped
into New York.
The brand 7-20-4 Cigars was founded in 1874 by R.G. Sullivan and
derives its name from the address of his Manchester, NH cigar
factory at 724 Elm Street. It has been said that Sullivan got his
start with the winnings from a lottery ticket featuring the
numbers 7, 20, and 4; however, writer George Franklyn Willey
offered an alternate explanation in his book, Willey's
semi-centennial book of Manchester, 1846-1896. The original name
of the cigars was "New Gold Dust Cigars" but Sullivan changed it
to 7-20-4 and they sold for 10¢ each being hand-made with high
quality tobacco. Sadly though this item cannot be shipped into
The popular story behind the 7-20-4 cigar brand is that it was
named after founder R.G. Sullivan's lottery ticket with winning
numbers 7, 20, and 4. However, according to George Franklyn
Willey's book Willey's semi-centennial book of Manchester,
1846-1896, Sullivan changed the name from "New Gold Dust Cigars"
to "7-20-4," in connection with the address of his cigar factory
at 724 Elm Street in Manchester, New Hampshire. The 10¢ cigars
were hand-made and unfortunately cannot be shipped into New York.
